METALLICA, mainly due to their self-effacing wit and general audience rapport, converted the atmosphere at the massive Bowl into one akin to the bonhomie experienced at smaller clubs. The glorious rifferama of the opening salvo, "Creeping Death" and "Harvester of Sorrow," set an early pace which many couldn't have lived with, let alone followed. But Metallica not only followed it, but enhanced the intensity.
"Wherever I May Roam," "The Unforgiven," and "Disposable Heroes" were inescapably indispensable. In fact, the only minor criticism of this show was the lengthy shout-along that was "Seek and Destroy," but, as this was preceded by the likes of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Master of Puppets," they are forgiven.
"Battery" closed the set in raucous fashion, Newsted's face contorting into ever increasing forms of angst, Ulrich's tongue working over time spitting words at the video screens. James Hetfield sat for the laid-back "Nothing Else Matters," but was soon back to his stomping best for "Sad But True" and "The Last Caress."
If the battleground scenario created to introduce "One" was spectacular in the arenas, it's awe inspiring in this setting. Which leaves just the coupling of "Enter Sandman" and "So What" as the grand finale. Metallica were the best rock band on the planet tonight.
