Live Review: Aerosmith, Hammersmith Odeon, 14th November, 1989

AERO-DYNAMIC

So it's finally happened!
AEROSMITH back playing live gigs in the UK after a 12 year absence!

A sold-out Hammy Odeon was justification enough of the fans' devotion as they eagerly awaited the lights to dim and the show to smash them for six!

And hit for six they were as Aerosmith took to the stage; the first notes of "Rats in the Cellar" had our ears rattling as the cobwebs of time were blown away in a matter of seconds. An ecstatic Steven Tyler delicately danced away those lost years, swirling his microphone stand and singing like a god, chewing gum securely in his mouth, while Joe Perry stood 'cool as a cucumber,' fag in mouth, gliding and grinding away on his growling guitar.

The songs poured out in a steady stream. Older material, such as "Lick and Promise" and "Sweet Emotion" were played back to back with new cuts from Permanent Vacation and PumpThe audience seemed as familiar with the old stuff as they did with the newer classics such as "Dude Looks Like a Lady" and "Love in an Elevator"... GOING DOOOOWN!

Of course, the Pump songs generated the biggest and loudest roars, but then they would, wouldn't they?

"Janie's Got a Gun," "Don't Get Mad Get Even," had us spinning our seats as the 'smiths steamed through their paces with effortless professionalism. Hammersmith was impressed.

One of the many evening's highlights (and there were quite a few) was the expressive ballad, "Dream On," which had the punters spellbound -- every note, every harmony; just perfect! The chemistry between band and audience was strikingly special. Bassist Tom Hamilton and skinsman Joey Kraemer along with rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford riffed and rolled with the best of them, while Tyler and Perry were just in a league of their own. Sensational stuff!

The lights sparkled as a lighting rig took the shape of a giant "A" as the crowd lapped up the atmosphere before the honorary encores. Aerosmith finally pumping up the volume with the BEATLES cover, "I'm Down," and their comeback classic, "Walk This Way," the song that helped to hurdle them back into super status!

You could say that Aerosmith have been there, seen it and done it. Years of experience behind them, they have swept the slate clean. There are no pretenders to their throne. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are a unique combination; Tyler with his tantalizing vocal gymnastics and Perry with his provocative finger work gives their music an edge that transcends all rock and roll barriers.

As for the concert, they came, they saw, they blew us away.
