Album Review: Magellan, "The Hour of Restoration"

With the likes of FLOYD, YES, GENESIS, and ELP shifting thousands from their back catalogs and are likely to record again, it seems there is still a firm place in the market for progressive rock acts. The smaller, less-known bands have to rely on loyalty, but they survive, and someone has such faith in the market, they've opened up a progressive label called Magna Carta, releasing this debut.

Unfortunately, MAGELLAN represent everything that is hated within the progressive tag. They come across as pompous, boring technos, forever wallowing in their own indulgence.

With the exception of two numbers, "Another Burning" and "Just One Bridge," everything they did left me cold.

Still, if you like RICK WAKEMAN's ghastly extravaganzas, you'll probably like Magellan. Good luck to their label Magna Carta, though. Brave move bringing out a label of this nature. I hope I like their next offering.
