Live Review: Yngwie Malmsteen, St. George's Hall, Bradford, 16th April, 1990

RISING FARCE

It's been a while since I last saw the Swedish guitar maestro, so tonight was going to be a pleasure!

First night of a new tour and YNGWIE has got a new band; all Swedish and all anonymous.
The whole band are just secondary to Yngwie and his fluent leads and widdly widdly guitar solos. With no well-known frontman to steal his thunder, Yngwie is now the focus of attention on stage; and oh how it shows! Kicking plectrums into the crowd and throwing all manner of poses with his guitar. All the rest of the group look as if they are hired hands; not doing a great deal except play. The singer doesn't move, he just sings! It's unusual as well that Yngwie introduces all the songs and raps with the crowd. No idea why.

As for the songs, most of them were culled from earlier albums like "You Don't Remember" and "See the Light Tonight."

From the new album came "Judas" and "Demon Driver," both reminiscent of RAINBOW in their style. Also "No Beginning No End," a good solid anthem from Eclipse; something to get your teeth into. Harmony vocals courtesy of
Yngwie and bassist Svante Henryson, and room of course for the self indulgent guitar solo. It then became an acapella singalong with the crowd, before climaxing in a crash of cords. The best song of the evening, really!

"Dreaming" came next with an acoustic intro by
Yngwie, then a keyboard intro led on for "Crystal Ball" and I saw the singer make a brave attempt this time.

Yngwie is now the only star of this band and he knows it! Of course, he's talented, playing fast and furious; a hundred-notes-a-second runs, but is it music?

Tonight
Yngwie forgot he had a band!... Next line-up please.
