Live Review: Guns N' Roses, Pantages Theatre, Los Angeles, 11th May, 1991

Los Angeles fans were treated to a surprise show by local favourites GUNS N' ROSES. The two-and-a-half hour set consisted of mostly new material culled from their forthcoming dual release Use Your Illusion 1&2.

With Axl's many costume changes and the band's relatively straight and humble attitude, the concert was a pleasant surprise to every one. New songs ranged from the punk type rocker "Pretty Tied Up" to the bluesy numbers "Dust and Bones" and "Bad Apples." "Dust and Bones" had Slash using a mouth organ and Axl, who admitted to missing rehearsals, using a teleprompter! Other new tunes included the soon-to-be-first single "Don't Cry" and the enigmatic "Knocking on Heaven's Door."

New members, Matt 'the tank monster' Sorum on drums and Dizzy Reid on keyboards gave GNR a much heavier sound than they have had in the past. Besides new tunes, the band went through a few covers and gave new meaning to songs such as Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed," McCartney's "Live and Let Die," and their own version of the Godfather theme... "Godslobber."

Classic GNR tunes, such as "Patience" and "Sweet Child O Mine" finally got the docile, sober LA audience in the mood and made the night for those in attendance.
