Album Review: LA Guns, "Hollywood Vampires"

"Never judge a book by its cover." Never has this classic old saying been more apt than with LA GUNS and Hollywood Vampires.

One-dimensional wasted LA gutter rockers? Forget it! This album makes a mockery of such lazy stereotyping; it's fit to burst with damned fine songs. There's nothing mediocre, let alone weak, on offer here. This isn't hype. Believe it!

The opening track "Over the Edge" is a real statement of intent. From the startling, ethereal, eastern intro, it builds into a majestic, sweeping song that hints at Classic ZEPPELIN, while songs like "My Koo Ka Choo," "Wild Obsession," and "Some Lie For Love" are infectious, exuberant, and laden with commercial potential.

Alongside these sparkling gems are the more blues-inflected up-tempo numbers like "Snake Eyes" and the gentle, wistful "It's Over Now." "Big House" also touches upon Zeppelin Territory, before imploding into a stunning crescendo. Although, if I had to single out one song,  it would be the haunting "Crystal Eyes," an ode to an angel (or 'hot babe' in LA) with vocalist Phil Lewis savouring the words - delicious!

The whole package is wrapped up in rich, full production, and though its injected and embellished with the occasional use of brass n' strings, it's never top heavy, nor too polished. A special mention also for a guitarist Traci Guns whose feel and versatility impresses throughout.

LA Guns' renewed zest and sense of purpose is in full flight here. So, sink your fangs into this one!
