Live Review: Joe Satriani, Leeds Colosseum, 24th May, 1990

GOD WAS 'ERE

The guitarist who has been nicknamed "God" by his followers and fans, due to his technical prowess and perfectness slid into Leeds, his first ever British state outside London and a sign of his growing popularity!

JOE SATRIANI is a guitarist without the ego trip flashness of others in the biz. He is a genuine master of the craft, rich notes crafted together in a blistering form. With his eyes closed he let the feeling of what he was playing segue out; "Flying in a Blue Dream" began the set in great fashion.

Most of the songs from his repertoire are instrumentals; songs that thump along on a thoroughly heavy backbeat, courtesy of Jonathan Mover on drums and Stu Hamm on bass. Those two gents provide the power of heaven drums and rumbling bass that is very upfront!

The sound is definitely different to anything I've ever heard, it's soulful and funky but still rockin'.

Joe moves about the stage slowly and methodically, arching his back as the high notes cry out. When he sings, he does so with a mellowness not often heard, a lot of feeling is put into the songs; this is particularly evident on the soulful "I Believe," which had the audience singing along and swaying to the mood. As mentioned Hamm and Mover rattle out such diverse rhythms that singing isn't needed; why sing when the three musicians alone can create wonderful songs.

Satriani barely tickles the strings, yet seems to achieve harmonies only dreamed of by some. The bass playing on these songs is outstanding, not just underpinning the guitar but battling for supremacy. Hamm must be one of the best bass players; he showed his great talent off during his solo playing and mind blowing riffs from his solo album. The ever hungry crowd lapped it up, the crunchiest riffs and absorbing leads, topped with excellent drumming from Mover.

The Satriani sound is an amalgamation of many sounds; boogie and classical meats rock, which blend together nicely. Rock music for guitar heroes and worshippers alike. He is God! Believe and enjoy it.
