Why were the Who such a great band? One reason was the incredible energy generated by the interplay of the unruly personalities of the band members, as demonstrated in this 1973 interview with Russell Harty (a gay TV interviewer from the 1970s). Somehow they managed to hang together without spinning off like shrapnel from an explosion, instead channeling the energy into legendary live performances.
