The word "cosy" springs to mind with this album. I think of it as a rather dirty fuzzy carpet that I can walk around on in my bare feet. It just has a nice tonality and texture. Sure, there's Billy Corgan off in the distance apparently wittering on in pain about something or other, but, to be honest, he doesn't sound too upset.
The music is kinda cool and grungy, with a burbling energy from the drums, softened by a lot of fuzzy guitar overdubs on top.
Each song is slightly different from the others and there are some cool "alt rock" touches, but nothing really stands out, not even the singles "Rhinoceros" and "Tristessa". If anything the former "sits in" more than "stands out" with it languid vibe and sleepy bass.
My favourite track is "Bury Me" simply because it picks up the energy again after "Rhinoceros."
Apparently, according to interviews with Richard Thomas of EQ Magazine, most of D'arcy Wretzky's bass lines and James Iha's guitar parts were leisurely re-recorded by Corgan using their instruments, with him and producer Butch Vig bro-geeking in the studio.
