Revenge Recommends, "Mother" by Pink Floyd

In time for Mothers' Day, here's one of the greatest rock songs ever about mothers.

In the late 70s punk rock was supposed to be the new, edgy, out-there music, but in fact the most dangerous rock music of the period was made by a bunch of 'old' psychedelic hippies called Pink Floyd, who, in 1979, released one of the most extreme albums of the period, the deeply psycho-political The Wall. Compared to this, what the Sex Pistols had been doing was mere snotty-nosed child's play.

The fact that this kind of music was also very popular, even scoring a number one hit with Another Brick in the Wall (Part One) shows just how much more advanced 'The People' were in those days.

Since then the dumbing down of the masses and the middle classes, and the destruction of a common British culture, means that what is cutting edge and what is popular now practically exist on different planets. Ironically, this means that the stance of Another Brick in the Wall (Part One), which takes aim at traditional British teaching methods, may in fact have been mistaken.

The Wall demonstrates that 1970s was a period when the tastes of the masses could, on occasion, coincide with radical culture - obviously a dangerous revolutionary combination that gave the establishment some unease, and one that simply does not exist today.

Lyrics

Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?

Mother do you think they'll like this song?
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Oooh, ahh, Mother should I build the wall?

Mother should I run for President?

Mother should I trust the government?
Mother will they put me in the firing line?
Oooh ahh, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry.

Mama's gonna make all your nightmares come true.
Mama's gonna put all her fears into you.
Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Mama's gonna keep baby cozy and warm.
Ooooh baby, ooooh baby, oooooh baby, of course mama's gonna help build the wall.

Mother do you think she's good enough, for me?

Mother do you think she's dangerous, to me?
Mother will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooooh ah, Mother will she break my heart?

Hush now baby, baby don't you cry.

Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you.
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through.
Mama's gonna wait up until you get in.
Mama will always find out where you've been.
Mama's gonna keep baby healthy and clean.
Ooooh baby, oooh baby, oooh baby, you'll always be baby to me.
Mother, did it need to be so high?
