Album Review: Savatage, "Streets, A Rock Opera"

Probably the most underrated power metal band on the planet. With the excellence of Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet going largely unnoticed, it's time to think screw it and go your own way - Streets' being the result.

Its story is complex, centring on the character of DT Jesus, a drug dealer who turns rock star but slips back into the horrors of his ex-career, but on seeing an ex-idol reduced to a shadow by narcotics, DT pulls himself together only to see his best friend murdered by his supplier. His search for inner peace seems fruitless until he comforts a dying tramp.

The tramp's "child spirt" leads DT to find himself whence he returns home to sleep the sleep of the saved and dreams wonderful dreams! Er, right on and all that.

"Jesus Saves" crushes in timeless SAVATAGE riffing style with Jon Oliva delivering vocal shades of unremitting power and passion. "You're Alive," recalls memories of THE WHO (don't mention Tommy or Quadrophenia). Other likenesses include ALICE COOPER. And specifically on the piano-led tracks ELTON JOHN. Though this is SAVATAGE's interpretation. No mistaking that!

Streets may not be the record to elevate SAVATAGE's status but they deserve your ears, if only for the nerve they've shown recording it.
