Album Review: Manic Street Preachers, "Gold Against The Soul"

A drunk invited himself over to my table recently slurring, "Manic Street Poachers, hic, bloody good ain't they!"

There's no arguing that. Even if they aren't pronounced properly, people are now aware of the Poachers' music. In Gold the Manics have jettisoned the excessive baggage prevalent on their debut and speared the material with an overriding sense of rock n' roll decadence.

Both Sleepflower and From Despair To Where groove above classic riffs. Elsewhere the psychedelia of Drug, Drug, Druggy, the furious GN'R-styled Nostalgic Pushead or the lilting Life Becoming A Landslide all point to the fact that Gold possesses the material backed with the attitude encapsulated in all great rock records. Da iawn bachgen - very good boys!
