Native Tongue is a progression of sorts, with new guitarist Richie Kotzen contributing a welcome thrust of gritty dynamics to their sound. In addition, Poison take on board quite a smattering of rootsy genres like gospel and country; end result a kind of cross between a flashy Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bon Jovi.
They sound uncomfortably like the latter on Stand with its all-embracing, anthemic sway. Granted there are no real turkeys here, in fact the psychedelic tinged Bring It Home, the genuinely emotive Theater of the Soul or the addictive hook of Blind Faith, merit more than just a casual listen. But, on the whole, Poison remain just too hackneyed and derivative. If they do have a soul, they ain't showing enough of it here. GRADE B
